Southampton High School senior Carlos Bernal Mendoza was recently selected to participate in the Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute.
Mendoza earned his spot through teacher recommendations for his interest in civics and government. He was also required to participate in an interview process, pen an essay and work with Assemblyman Fred Thiele to conduct an analysis of proposed bills.
The leadership institute aims to provide student empowerment, leadership development, civic engagement, and an understanding of New York state government and the legislative process.
This is not the first leadership conference that Mendoza has participated in. Last summer, he was selected for the American Legion New York Boys State program, which is designed to build leadership skills and teach students about how the state’s government operates.
Mendoza will be attending SUNY Geneseo in the fall to study political science and law.
