BMI Reporting

As part of the school health examination, a student is weighed and his/her height is measured. These numbers are used to calculate the student's Body Mass Index- also known as BMI.

The BMI helps the doctor or nurse know if the student's weight is in a health range.

New York State Education law requires that BMI and weight status group be included on all school health examinations.

A sample of school districts will be selected each year to take part in a survey that is submitted to the New York State Department of Health. Only a summary of this data will be sent.

No names or information about the individual students are sent.

You may choose to have your child's information excluded from this survey report. You must submit a letter requesting your child be excluded.
