Southampton High School senior Isabel Fino-Morfogen has gained invaluable insight into international work that is being done to promote gender equality. As president of her school’s Girls Learn International club, she was recently selected to attend the 70th annual meeting of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women.

During the three-day event, held at United Nations Headquarters in New York City, Fino-Morfogen attended panel discussions, workshops and networking sessions where she made connections with fellow high school students.

“It was an amazing experience,” she said, noting the opportunity for cultural exchange and gaining a greater understanding of geopolitics. “I have learned how important it is to work together to make an impact.”

Through Girls Learn International, Fino-Morfogen also attended a six-week intensive Summer Activist Training Camp over Zoom and worked with a fellow GLI member in California to produce a film on the status of women under Taliban rule, which was presented at the Commission on the Status of Women. Additionally, she has taught writing as activism as part of the International Day of the Girl Child. Her work through GLI has inspired her to pursue history, politics, English and film studies in college this fall.

Aside from serving as president of her school’s Girls Learn International club, Fino-Morfogen is also president of her school’s Save Promise Club, drama club and Voices of Southampton Choir, as well as historian of the National Honor Society. She is also a member of Mock Trial and an All-County singer, and she recently wrote and directed an original literary concert based on Louisa May Alcott’s novel “Little Women” for her school.
