Southampton Senior Gains Hands-On Medical Experience In Tanzania

Posted Date: 10/21/26 (08:17 PM)

Southampton High School senior Jan Gredysa gained firsthand insight into the medical field this summer when he traveled to Tanzania with his father, a physician, as part of a 15-day medical mission with Operation International.

Gredysa, who has an interest in pursuing a career in medicine, was eager to participate after reflecting on his father’s previous experiences with the organization. He thought the trip would provide a perfect opportunity to work with his father while serving communities in need.

During the trip, Gredysa worked alongside medical professionals and translators, assisting with paperwork, organizing and setting up medical supplies and supporting the team’s efforts in the field. He also observed surgical procedures up close, gaining a firsthand look at the realities of working in medicine.

One of his biggest takeaways, he said, was witnessing the importance of teamwork in providing patient care. He observed how doctors, nurses and other medical professionals work closely together and rely on one another, particularly during emergencies. He said he was astounded by the way medical professionals use their training to remain calm, focused and disciplined under pressure.

The experience further strengthened Gredysa’s interest in medicine. He plans to study biochemistry on a pre-med track in college.

At school, Gredysa serves as an ex officio member of the Southampton Board of Education, is a member of his school’s Varsity, Fishing and Outing Clubs and is a competitive swimmer. He swims as part of the joint Southampton and East Hampton varsity swim team that he helped launch, and in club swimming. He is also a record-holding angler with 28 world records from the International Game Fish Association.
